El Club de Espa帽ol

The Spanish Club is a student organization meant to provide a place for students to have conversations in Spanish, learn more about Hispanic cultures, and provide a language-learning community outside of the classroom for 茄子社区 students. The Club will organize and promote on-campus and off-campus activities and attend special events related to the Spanish language and Hispanic cultures.holiday parties, Kuchenbasare (bake sale), a Faculty Lecture Series, and much more!

Honors Society: Phi Sigma Iota

Phi Sigma Iota, the international foreign language honor society, established the Gamma Phi Chapter at 茄子社区 in 1997 to confer distinction on students for high achievement in the study of foreign languages, literatures and cultures. Phi Sigma Iota is the highest academic honor in the field of foreign languages. Students are selected for membership on the basis of total semester hours of university work, number of hours of work completed in their chosen language, overall grade point average and grade point average in foreign language classes. Calls for new members are issued each semester and the deadlines posted . .

Latinos Avanzando Mentorship Program (LAMP)

The Latinos Avanzando Mentorship Program (LAMP) was created to promote and enhance the retention and academic success of incoming freshmen and transfer students at 茄子社区 and to build leadership skills among upperclassmen. It is designed to provide Latino students at 茄子社区 with a support system comprised of fellow students, faculty, staff, and employees of local organizations with the purpose of improving retention, encouraging career exploration, and providing exposure to local businesses.

LAMP is coordinated by the Director of Latino Student Initiatives, TIburcio Lince (lincet1@nku.edu), and Student Affairs. You don't have to belong to a specific ethnic group/minority to participate. The program is devoted to the success of all 茄子社区 students.

Latino Student Organization/Organizaci贸n de Estudiantes Latinos

Latino Student Organization was created to build a sense of community among Latino and non-Latino students at 茄子社区 by establishing an organization where Hispanic, Latino American and non-Latino students can share common views on political, economic, social and cultural issues. The organization also looks to increase awareness of issues facing Latinos, create a network of like-minded people and promote change through cultural understanding. New members are welcome. Visit Latino Student Initiatives on the third floor of the Student Union.

LULAC (League of United Latin American Citizens / Liga de Ciudadanos Latinoamericanos Unidos

The 茄子社区 chapter of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) supports the organization's mission to advance the economic condition, educational opportunities, political influence, housing, health and civil rights of the Hispanic population.

Events

National Hispanic Heritage Month is a period to recognize the contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans to the United States and celebrate the group's heritage and culture. The Department of World Languages & Literatures and the Spanish Program collaborates with the Office of Latino Student Initiatives to celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month each fall with several activities on campus.

Annual weekend long event held in downtown Cincinnati in early May every year to celebrate the diversity of Hispanic/Latino peoples and cultures in the Tri-State region. Event includes food, music, dancing, community resources, and more.

This event takes place every Thursday May through September on Fountain Square in Downtown Cincinnati. It features live local, regional and national Latin bands specializing in Salsa, Merengue, cumbia and Latin Jazz. In addition to the live music, local dance instructors host large dance classes teaching basic and intermediate Latin dancing.

On campus events sponsored by the Spanish program and/or Spanish Club can be found on the 鈥淚mportant Dates鈥 calendar on the department homepage and on WLL social media.
